Further to last week's announcement of a research project with Oregon State University, we are also developing a design study of palm lumber with ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA.

Here are a few photos that capture our annual holiday party for Smith & Fong employees, family and friends. This year it took place at Park Chalet in Golden Gate Park, across from the Pacific Ocean.

Looking down the palm road for 2017, we are in the process of developing a palm research program with Oregon State University, one of the premier wood science research universities in North America.

Since 2000, the Brower Youth Awards has recognized outstanding young leaders who are making strides in the environmental and social justice movement. Under the umbrella of the New Leaders Initiative, the Brower Youth Awards provide an elevated platform to showcase and honor the accomplishments of young leaders. 

Each year, six young people based in North America are awarded this prize, joining a growing and diverse group of green leaders who are publicly recognized for their sustainable projects, innovative ideas, and informed actions.

Though not well understood in modern design circles, palm has been used for interior design applications in tropical environments from the Pacific Islands to India, Africa and the Caribbean for centuries. However, a few western designers as far back as the 1900s have explored this mysterious, unpredictable and curious material.
