Environment and Sustainability

From the beginning, Smith & Fong has been dedicated to sustainability. We make our decisions based on quality and design as well as social and environmental considerations. We believe that profit is the byproduct --not the product-- of a job well done. We have worked hard to earn a reputation for integrity and consider the trust our customers place in us one of our greatest assets.

We believe in the natural sustainability of bamboo forestry and the harvesting practices developed over centuries of experience. To validate the legitimacy of our forestry practices, we sought out the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for their help in certifying our Moso bamboo forest in China. After a two-year process, we succeeded in becoming the first bamboo company to offer FSC® Certified 100% bamboo flooring, plywood and veneer in the North American market.

As adhesive sciences improved and concern for indoor air quality grew, we became the first adapters of formaldehyde-free manufacturing in both the bamboo and palm industries. We confirmed our success with California Section 01350 testing, still the most stringent off-gas testing protocol available anywhere.

In an effort to streamline our formaldehyde-free program, an interesting alternative appeared--soy-based, formaldehyde-free resins. To our knowledge there was only one other company worldwide that was using anything similar. We liked it. Over a three-year process we were successful in adapting the soy-based resin to our unique bamboo manufacturing process. This allowed us to become the first bamboo company to offer a soy-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive system, surpassing emission requirements and setting a new level for clean in the industry.

In order to improve our processes and our products, we undergo independent auditing and hold certification with FSC® Certified 100%, well-managed forestry, FloorScore, requiring 01350 off-gas testing as well as management and factory controls and ISO 14001, a world standard in environmental control protocols. We also make every effort to recycle, reuse or use recycled materials in our packaging. Smith & Fong is directly engaged in setting environmental company policy and goals.
